The film "Witness" was originally conceived and based on the documentation and testimonies of a forensic medicine specialist from Belgrade, prof. Dr. Zoran Stanković concerning the suffering of the Serbian people during the war events of the 1990s in the territory of the countries of the former Yugoslavia.
The film represents a kind of collective confession of the Serbian people about their suffering, and through the cinematic expression, to a large extent, unifies the map of their suffering.
Working on more than 50 mass graves throughout the former country and the autopsy of more than 7,500 victims, Prof. Dr. Zoran Stanković is the only person who testified in this way about the Golgotha of the Serbs at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century.
Only on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina prof. Dr. Zoran Stanković performed exhumations and autopsies on more than thirty mass and individual graves. With archival material and archival testimonies of prof. Dr. Zoran Stanković, and the testimonies of the surviving members of the victims' families, members of his closest family, members of his autopsy team, journalists, videographers, lawyers participated in the film. Numerous members of the Serbian people testify in the film about the tragic fates of their family members, and about the personal horrors they went through in the process of identification.
